  • Likely: PlayStation Move Retails for $99

The peripheral formerly speculated as "Gem" or "Arc" was today officially unveiled as "PlayStation Move." There was no clear indication of price except that it would be under $100.

From my years of experience following consumer unveils and "target price points," a $99 price for Sony's entry into motion gaming seems likely.

During today's GDC press conference, Sony presented the possibility of three different configurations for Move purchasers this fall: standalone, bundled with PlayStation Eye, and included as a part of a future PS3 bundle.

An official release date and launch lineup should be forthcoming when E3 rolls around in June.

  • Tekken Heading to iPhone Next

What is the world coming to? First, Street Fighter IV is officially announced for touch portables then Namco decides to throw in their hat into the ring with Tekken now rumored to take the iPhone plunge, according to PocketGamer.

Patrick and I just got the news right before we taped tomorrow's GDP (GamerDeals Podcast) and were not completely convinced of a fighter with no physical inputs.

What do you guys think? Down to touch-fight at work during breaks?
  • Portal 2 to Use Paint as Part of its Gaming Hook?

Portal 2, as a full-fledged retail product, was officially announced by Valve last week and today we have more juicy rumoring about the game.

Co-op gaming is interesting enough but Shacknews is also thinking it may include a level painting hook.

Reason? The latest issue of Game Informer, with Portal 2 on the cover, made mention of "using special paint that gives unique physical properties to surfaces (eg rocket jumping, speed bursts, etc)," commented Shacknews forum member Masem.

Sounds very similar to what the DigiPen team behind Tag: The Power of Paint was working on...

  • New Game Releases for the Week of March 8, 2010!

  • Splinter Cell Goes Touch. iPod Touch.

Yeah, yeah. When the I N T E R N E T refers to portable touch gaming, they say "iPhone gaming," but I figured the iPod Touch does pretty much the same thing and deserves some attention after putting up with excessive amounts of neglect. Plus! Matches the title you read above.

Ah, but I digress. The above image popped up recently on teaser site Sam's New Mission that points directly to Apple headquarter's location.

Any ideas on what would make a good touch-based Splinter Cell game? Shout outs are welcome below.

  • Battlefield: Bad Company 2 - A Paragraph Half Review

Having Gamefly'd Battlefield: Bad Company 2 this week, I decided I would wrap up the single-player portion of the game in time to send back for some Final Fantasy XIII game time next week. Didn't get a chance to fully delve into multiplayer much, so here's my thoughts on how the Campaign mode stacked up:

Battlefield: Bad Company 2 can stand on its own merits as a game but the comparison is inevitable: is it better than Modern Warfare 2? As far as single-player is concerned, the answer is a resounding "no." Weapon shots are an aural treat, its unique blend of world deformation is unmatched in a shooter, and the comedic role play between your band of brothers adds a refreshing lighthearted touch to the FPS norm. But, aside from a few tense moments during the campaign, single-player mostly serves as an above-average romp through ice and jungle levels with a stingy checkpoint system and a cliche story straight out of your average spy book. You may still find your safe haven from glitch-loving online opponents in Bad Company 2's multiplayer but the other half of the package is definitely flawed.

  • 24 Hour PS3 Shutdown: What Happened?

And we thought the scares of the Y2K bug were behind us! Apparently, our fancy next-gen George Foreman grills are susceptible (????) to the same world-ending system errors. From 4pm Sunday to 4pm earlier today, the PlayStation Network took a nosedive. What happened?

"We are aware that the internal clock functionality in the PS3 units other than the slim model, recognized the year 2010 as a leap year. Having the internal clock date change from February 29 to March 1 (both GMT), we have verified that the symptoms are now resolved and that users are able to use their PS3 normally," said Senior Director of Corporate Communications & Social Media for SCEA, Patrick Seybold, on the company's blog.

So "leap year" bug, eh? Sounds like the SYSTEM'S plan to take over the world was foiled once again! You can listen in on more of our thoughts on tomorrow's GDP (GamerDeals Podcast).

  • Review: Shoot 1UP

    Short version: This year's I MAED A GAM3 W1TH Z0MB13S 1N IT!!!1

Long version: Shoot 1UP is on the fast track to be this year's best shmup, which is both a boisterous claim since it's only March, and an unusual claim as its an Xbox Independent release.

Shoot 1UP comes to us from Mommy's Best Games, the team behind last year's superb but criminally overlooked Weapon of Choice, and the pedigree is apparent. The genre evolving innovations that Weapon of Choice brought to side-scrolling shooters have definite echoes in top-down shooter sibling Shoot 1UP.

The main concept behind Shoot 1UP is that while most shmups take your extra lives and put them into storage, Shoot 1UP says, "Hell with it, put them all in play at once". The result is that rather than piloting a single ship, you pilot a phalanx of ships. Besides just adjusting your position on the screen, you can also adjust the tightness and looseness of your phalanx using either the trigger or shoulder buttons, which adds a whole new layer to the strategy.

Going through a wave of enemies from all angles? Widen your formation, and the swath of destruction you cut will widen as the ships spread apart. Flying brazenly into bullet hell? Tighten the formation for more precise navigation through the gauntlet.

Another nice touch that plays with the phalanx’s tightness is bonus scoring. Most enemies drop bonus points that you have to swoop in and collect to receive the score bonus, and the value of the bonuses increase depending on how wide your formation is spread. Essentially, more guts, more glory.

Your phalanx has a couple more neat tricks up its sleeve, as holding down the attack button can cause the ships to combine their fire into an intense Plasma Auger for tough enemies and screen filling bosses, and taking a second to give your shooting finger a break will give you a short range 360-degree burst surrounding each ship for a nice defensive weapon.

Three difficulty levels and a "Score Trek" mode allow for the masochistic game play of your choice. If there's any shortcoming to the game, its firstly that the backgrounds are highly repetitive (something you'll only notice during the short breathers) and secondly that the game itself is rather short. But in-game Achievements and co-op extend the game play and more than make up for these minor faults, and at the $1 price point a game only a fifth as fun and engaging would still be worth the money.

  • Coming Never: The Silver Lining

On today's episode of "You've Wasted Eight Years of Your Life", we focus on the Phoenix Online Studios. Phoenix Online Studios (I’m on their side, so don’t expect me to use the acronym “POS“) has spent the last eight years toiling on a fan-made love-labored sequel to King's Quest 8 called "The Silver Lining".

A lot can happen in eight years. Originally, when Phoenix began The Silver Lining, the King's Quest properties were owned by Vivendi, who took them over from Sierra. Today, though, the Sierra library is owned by the game industries own Oceania, Activision.

Videndi actually had given Phoenix Online Studios permission to run with The Silver Lining, granting them a non-commercial license for it, something Phoenix was planning to run with when they launched The Silver Lining as a episodic release this Spring.

Then, in a move that perhaps doesn't pull as many heartstrings as Squenix killing the fan-made Chrono Trigger sequel a few months ago, but one much more insidious, the enchanted sword fell. Activision's legal team (which I can only assume is referred to as the unfortunately catchy "Actilegal") has apparently reneged that decision and issued Phoenix a cease and desist order on The Silver Lining, going so far as forcing The Silver Lining's forums to be taken down.

Let's pause there for a second, and reflect. Activision literally removed The Silver Lining from gaming. Tell me that's not a metaphor coming to life.

This comes on the heels of the gaming community's favorite carrion crawler, Activision CEO Bobby Kotick (Bo-Kot on the streets) announcing during his keynote at DICE that Activision is going to take pains to work more closely and cooperative with its licensees. Which, judging by how they handled Red Octane, means they'll co-opt The Silver Lining, farm it out to another developer, complain when it doesn't change the industry as they expect, kill the whole studio, and say they should have gone with Phoenix to begin with.

On a side note, I’m disappointed that no one caught on that Bo-Kot did NOT deliver a real keynote at DICE. His “business casual” and message of peace and love was obviously a performance piece meant to satire Steve Jobbs. My personal favorite part was when he explained he started out as "just a developer". Historical note: Hitler started out as "just a painter". Moving on...

Personally, I'm hoping that Phoenix Online Studios can find a way to strip The Silver Lining of its King's Quest heritage enough to dodge copyright restrictions and release it. And I hope it sells a ton, when it does. I'll personally buy and give away several copies if they can manage to do so, in fact, if for no reason other than to stick it to an biased and inefficient copyright system.

But that’s a gripe for another day.

  • Review: Heavy Rain (PS3)

Plenty has been said about what games can be and how far the medium has come in its 40-year-plus history. Quantic Dream is the latest to put its foot forward on the matter with Heavy Rain, a fully produced triple-A title that hopes to accomplish what's been solely the realm of the -- yes, sometimes pretentious -- indie game art scene. Did they succeed?

In many ways, HR is everything games have been striving for since they went 3D: The ability to relate to the characters we play as instead of just portraying our command presses as violent avatars is there. And there are even moments in the game that may not exactly be fun (i.e. crawling over glass in a vent labyrinth) but it pushes the fact that video games are interactive entertainment and the possibility to treat them as such. Not just as play toys with a high score.

Short of redefining the Shenmue-advanced genre, of course, Heavy Rain mostly succeeds in telling a narrative filled with believable characters going through a depressing spell and the hunt for a serial killer on the loose. Hardly original, I know, but never before have you been able to feel the story as is the case in Quantic Dream's latest.

You'll be put through the wringer when characters die; experience child responsibilities and the joys of playing with them; and, before the credits roll, struggle with mature themes of love and betrayal.

And those are just the themes made obvious through playing HR. What's left up to the player to discover of everyone's motivations and background through subtle dialogue is incredibly gratifying -- devoid of the overwrought exposition most other games are guilty of. Quantic Dream took the best bits of story telling and matched it to the gameplay seamlessly.

Pressing L2 takes you into each character's mindset and gives you further context as to what you're next goal in the environment is, not a gold arrow guiding the way. Multiple quick-time event choices give you the option to cheat when counting, kill or not kill, and augment sequences of emotional burden.

For that last one, think to the end of MGS4 where Old Snake struggles to get from one side of a hallway to the other. Heavy Rain takes that concept and expands on it ten-fold with the added gravity that you may fail and the story would continue -- with or without you.

That said, HR's "gameplay" is not perfect and definitely not for everyone. While the action scenes are some of the more intense moments in gaming history, sometimes I wished I was more in control of what was happening. Pressing left, right, square, triangle, whatever at the right time is handled well enough in the game, but I couldn't help to imagine what could've been if it was playable in real-time.

Other small gripes with the game include audio glitches and, even, the audio itself. For the most part, the game is well acted and voiced but certain moments -- especially all of the banter between Norman Jayden and Lt. Blake -- fall flat to the point where they come off as comical. Also, the trials you go through bring in an unwelcome "Saw" feeling to the, otherwise, excellent story, I thought.

Taking it as a whole, though, HR exceeds past its flaws to present a memorable package with lasting appeal that, surely, games will come to incorporate in the future. It is mature past the presumed M-rated status of other games that usually fall in the adult immaturity end of the category. And it has a daring save system that, while arduous for those of us into trophy hunting, gives you no easy way out once you've dug your own grave, so to speak.

How the game doesn't fit nicely in the aspects of a review -- i.e. visuals, gameplay -- and can, instead, be judged mostly on its cohesive whole is part of the brilliance of its design. Should it be considered a "game?" Doesn't matter.

HR is an interactive experience just as the developer proposed it to be as it is not always fun to play, but always engaging. An example of the culmination of what's come before in gaming and the maturation of the industry that's allowed this piece to be possible.

    Closing Thoughts:

With Heavy Rain, Quantic Dream goes for not just redefining a genre but what a "game" is, in general. They tell a story of four different characters' interacting with a world that's failed them and how they progress through it. The choices you make -- some times in the blink of an eye -- carry over in hours of game play and creates dread and a sense of uneasiness made possible only by your direct impact on it. The controls can hinder that feeling at times but the overarching story in this effective "interactive drama" more than delivers on its lofty and innovative setup. It's one giant quick-time event, but one worth exploring.

  • eBay Auction Nets Record $41,300 for Rare NES Game!

Yesterday, a factory sealed North American (NTSC) version of Stadium Events (NES) sold for a record $41,300!

The NTSC version is universally accepted as the rarest licensed NES game available for purchase in North America.

At the time of its launch during the holiday season of 1987, Stadium Events was only available in limited stores prior to Nintendo purchasing the distribution rights.

The two Family Fun Fitness-branded games that had already been released, as well as Bandai's version of the running pad accessory (rights purchased for the Nintendo Power Pad), were pulled from shelves and presumed destroyed. Because of this odd sequence of events, only 2000 copies are believed to have been produced, of which it is estimated that 200 copies reached consumers before being recalled.

After this auction, I imagine many attics boxes will be scanned...

  • Easiest Gold Trophies of the Forever: Frogger Returns

While it hurts me to divulge easy Gold trophies of any kind...I'm here for you: the reader. And, as such is my responsibility, I'm letting you know that before you go suffering through multiple playthroughs in Heavy Rain for two, degrading Gold trophies, you can do that in Frogger Returns instead.

It's cheap ($5), easy, and will net you 3 Gold, 1 Silver trophies in under an hour. First, from the main menu, hit up "Free Play" and simply beat the four levels of the game.

Done. Playing through this way may destroy the challenge of the game, but meh, you're in this for the trophy gain, right? Just please don't tell @DarthMazza. We're competing and he seriously doesn't need the tip...

  • EA Sucks Says UFC's Dana White

"We went to EA and we talked to them about [a UFC game], they said...'this isn't a real sport, these aren't real athletes and we would never do a game like this,'" UFC's President Dana White said on yesterday's X-Play episode.

He continued by saying, "So our game comes out and makes a bunch of money. And look at EA: 'Now, its a real sport, isn't it? And these are real athletes.' EA sucks."

White is renowned for his blunt opinions and making sure everyone hears about it. He talks tough publicly, but I'd like to see him turn down an EA licensing deal if the money's right. It seems like he cares about the quality of UFC titles so competition similar to what went on with the NFL 2K/Madden series a few years ago would only propel the franchise forward.

Do you agree with his aversion to EA or should he try to expand his company as much as possible?
